Taguhi
Barsegian was born in Erevan, the
Soviet Republic of Armenia. As a child, Taguhi aspired to become a famous
ballerina, to be on stage wearing beautiful costumes in different roles,
to be admired, to be loved. Although her dream to dance never came to fruition,
her quest for artistic expression led to her discovery of another Taguhi
endlessly studied and experimented with various painting techniques and
styles until she developed a language that was completely her own. She
sites Medieval art, Renaissance masters, and art of the contemporary world
as her biggest influences, but hints of the Rococo, Post-Impressionism
and Surrealism also resonate from her works.
Forever fascinated with the purity and simplistic beauty
of basic shapes and forms, Barsegian utilizes a geometric framework to
depict her synthesized scenes of everyday life, dreams and fantasies. The
bulbous, cherub-like figures of her works call to mind the focus of her
earliest artistic creations, the perfect features of a flower. At times
resembling a child’s toys lost on a never-ending tabletop, her fairy-tale-like
scenes are not necessarily as innocent as they might seem. Taguhi’s otherworldly
genre paintings tell a unique story to every person privileged enough to
be in the presence of one.
